Musings from an Artist's Notebook: Discomfort
Ah, the joys of being human. We're a messy bunch, always trying to navigate the ups and downs of life with a mix of confidence and uncertainty. And yet, despite our best efforts, we often find ourselves stuck in a cycle of comfort and complacency. We settle into our routines, avoiding anything that might make us feel uncomfortable or vulnerable. But here's the thing: growth happens in the midst of discomfort.
The Creative Process
As artist, I know this all too well. I've spent countless hours honing my craft and perfecting technique. But even with all that practice and experience, I still face moments of frustration, self-doubt, and uncertainty. These "ugly stages" are a natural part of the creative process, and they can be downright daunting to face.
And I am sure, whatever your profession, you'll experience these same elements one way or another.
Discomfort As A Door
But what if I told you that these moments of discomfort are not something to be feared, but rather something to be celebrated?
Discomfort is not the enemy; it's a catalyst for growth. And I'm not just talking about artistic growth; I'm talking about personal growth, too.
Taking risks and stepping outside your comfort zone can be scary, but it's also incredibly liberating.
Hence the pink in the painting above - a risk taken. Not sure I love it, but the process was exciting and that's the point. 😄
When we take risks, we open ourselves up to new experiences, new opportunities, and new possibilities. And when we step outside our comfort zone, we discover new strengths, new talents, and new passions.
So, What Is There to Do?
So, how can you start embracing discomfort and taking risks? Here are some of the things I do myself:
Try something new: Take a cooking class, learn a new language, or try a new hobby. The possibilities are endless!
Welcome your fears: What's holding you back from pursuing your dreams? Is it fear of failure, fear of success, or something else entirely? Whatever it is, face it head-on and watch yourself grow.
Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself when you make mistakes or face setbacks. Remember that everyone fails sometimes, and it's okay to not be perfect.
So, go ahead and take the leap. Take a risk, step outside your comfort zone, and practice self-compassion. You never know what amazing things you might discover.
